Coaches and Parents, Read This!

Irvine, CA - Rain, rain, go away! As we get our first rains of the season, it is important to understand if a field is open for play. The City of Irvine makes the final determination on whether a field is open or closed based on current field conditions, as they are responsible for field maintenance and ensuring they are playable and safe. Coaches and parents should check the Irvine MUDDLine for up-to-date information on field availability.

For any baseball game, expect to play it unless the Irvine City Field Conditions website shows the field as closed. There will be a few times where the field is open, you show up to play the game, it starts to rain, then the Irvine City field ambassador comes out and tells you the field is closed. Thankfully that is a fairly rare event, but it does happen.

If no field ambassador is available and the field is otherwise open, managers are expected to use their judgement on whether a game should be continued. Any lightning in the area would be immediate cause for cancellation, for example.

Upper division games (AA and higher) that are canceled or halted because of field conditions will be rescheduled as needed. Lower division games will not be rescheduled, but teams are welcome to use their regularly scheduled practice fields and times to make-up canceled games.

Field conditions will be updated on weekdays by 1 p.m. for high school use and 3 p.m. for youth and adult sports use. Weekend updates begin at 7:30 a.m. and as conditions change.

There are several ways to access field condition information. Please use one of the following methods:

Twitter:                Follow @irvine_muddline

Text/Email:        Subscribe here to receive text and/or email updates from the City of Irvine.

Voicemail:          Call 949-724-6833 (MUDD)

Website:             Visit cityofirvine.org/mudd for up-to-date conditions.

Coaches, teams and players must stay off fields that are closed. The City of Irvine will determine when field conditions are appropriate to resume normal activity. Use of closed fields can lead to extended closures for repair or restoration.
