SPRING SEASON UPDATE

Please read for the latest on our upcoming season

To the Northwood community,

Good news! The State of California has recently released guidance for youth sports, including baseball. Since baseball is an outdoor moderate contact sport, the State has assigned it the second lowest risk level for youth recreational activities. Based on the new guidance, baseball games can be played once Orange County returns to the red tier according to the state’s tiered system of COVID test positivity and case rate. This means there is a path forward for our league to resume competition, possibly as early as this coming spring season.

This is undoubtedly positive news. Our experience in Fall Ball also indicates that baseball can be a safe outdoor activity if done properly. It is also important to note that the current guidelines in place will remain unchanged until Orange County is out of the Regional Stay at Home Order. The reality is that the timeline for Orange County to move to the red tier is unknown. As a result, the spring season will start as a practice-only season, and there is a possibility it stays that way for the duration of the spring.

Northwood Little League will continue to plan as if there will be games. This means we will be balancing teams in our competitive divisions through a draft. We will share more information as we get closer to the start of the season.

We have also reviewed our fee structure and tried to cut costs where possible. Our 2021 spring registration fees have been reduced in most age groups. Although we hope to play games this spring, we can not guarantee that they will be played. Our registration fees cover not just our current season’s costs, but also must cover the ongoing costs of running the league. Please refer to our FAQ for more information on how your registration fees are spent, and our new refund policy for this coming season.

Although much uncertainty remains, the coming vaccines and this new guidance shows that the return of games is within sight. We can’t wait to welcome our teams back to the fields! As always, thank you for choosing to play with Northwood Little League.

Sincerely,

Ted Hsieh

President, Northwood Little League
